Cambelt Time. Empty Cambelt Time.

Hello there everyone,
Its been bugging me for ages but its now time to pull my finger out and get the cam/timing belt changed on my much loved A8. I've already got a new full cambelt kit and a new fanbelt plus a new water pump worth changing while the cambelt is already off.
The only problem I have is that ever since owning the car I've not been able to find a good guide like a Haynes manual?
Any help finding good a comprehencive guide to the car would be greatful and would definatly help with the cambelt renewal.
I've only got the baby 2.8 30v so hopfully the job won't be to hard???
Many thanks Dan.

I would change the thermostat too - if I remember correctly they are not too much but also need the front off to do so its just safer to change one at the same time

Thanks for the fast replys.

Thanks for the heads up Architex I've now ordered a new thermostate (the bill seems to just keep getting bigger and bigger)?

Thanks Clt I'd be very gratefu for that, I've looked on the vin plate and gone through the docs they say the engine code is ACK? I'll have to pull the plastic trim off to find out for sure tomorrow.

Thanks again Dan.

The ACK was used in the A4, A6 and A8 95 - 99. Haynes don't do a manual for it so there is only really Elsawin from Fleabay or Erwin online on the pay per use.

Thanks Ctl I think I'll look into getting the Elsawin manual, I'm sure I've seen it before on on fleebay on a disc?

I've managed to get most of the belt change sorted this week just need to rebuild the front back up now. I only had the one problem and it was a quite a big one at that? While removing the alternator belt crank pully I also managed to pull off the small toothed crank pully for the cambelt and lose the timing????

Not good at all!!!!!!

My old man however managed to get me the autodata page for the ACK engine timing and believe it or not the TDC point for the timing is taken from cylinder 3? Anyhow its now running and with a bit more work it'll hopefully be finished tomorrow?

I searched the net for days to try and find this info with no really luck!
Here's what I used to to set my timing and hopefully it will help others with the ACK 2.8 30v engine?

Thanks dad.

nice one - glad to hear she's running well now!
I'm thinking you must have indoor facilities or you would probably have no hands left through frost-bite lol

Nicely done Dan Happy

Whilst the bill for parts has grown, you've saved yourself a small fortune in labour by doing it yourself. For these beauties, this is where the largest part of the cost comes from when paying someone to do it for you

Hey DannyG!!!: Nice job on the TB.

I am interested in your posted screen images...where did you find them on your internet search...could you share the link ??

The description and walk-thru seem very specific. Elsawin & Bentley are less detailed from what I can read from your screen shots.

It appears to be AutoData printed manual ??? The electronic version are not the same as the old Chilton's printed manuals...I have not seen any printed manuals anywhere. My library only has the old Chilton's & Haines' from 1970's to 2000's in bound versions...but edited down from the originals. The newer Chilton's & Haines' are basically online...but very shallow in details.

Much appreciated...Happy New 2011...Year
